An assignment is a piece of homework for one class. It can be answered online in the portal, where many answers are marked automatically, or done on paper. Teachers see this page as Homework under Teaching.

What you see on the list

  • Summary cards: Assignments, Submissions and Subjects covered.
  • The table: Assignment (a link to open it), Class, Subject, Due, Questions, Max marks and Submissions.
  • Row buttons: View, Edit and Delete.
  • A pager once there are more than 25 assignments.

Create an assignment

  1. Press New assignment.
  2. Type the Title (up to 140 characters).
  3. Choose the Class. Teachers must choose one.
  4. Choose a Subject and a Due date.
  5. Choose How will students answer?: Online, in the portal, or On paper.
  6. Optionally open More options (teacher, total marks, instructions) to set a Teacher, Total marks and Instructions.
  7. Press Create assignment. You are taken to the assignment to add questions.

Opening an assignment shows it in three steps: Details, Questions and Submissions.

Step 1: Details

  • Shows Due, How students hand in and Instructions. Press Edit details to change them.
  • In edit mode you can change the Title, Due date, Total marks (only before any questions exist), the hand-in method and the Instructions, then press Save changes.
  • Delete assignment is in the edit form, for people who may delete.

Step 2: Add questions

  1. On an online assignment, press Add a question. With no questions yet the form is already open.
  2. Choose What kind of question? The four common types are shown. Press More types for the rest.
  3. Type the Question, or Statement or Instruction for some types.
  4. Fill in the answer details for the type (see the list below).
  5. Set the Marks for the question (the default is 1, up to 1000).
  6. Press Add question. The form clears so you can add the next one.

The ten question types

  • One answer (Single choice): the student picks exactly one option. Enter 2 to 10 different options and tick the circle next to the correct one. Marked automatically.
  • Many answers (Multiple choice): the student picks every correct option. Tick each right option. It is all or nothing: the student must choose exactly the right set. Not every option can be correct. Marked automatically.
  • True / False: write a statement and choose whether it is True or False. Marked automatically.
  • Short answer (Short text): a one-line answer. Enter the Right answers, one per line, and it is marked automatically, ignoring capital letters and extra spaces. Leave them empty and you mark it yourself.
  • Essay (Long text): a paragraph answer. There is no answer key, you mark it yourself.
  • File upload: the student attaches up to 5 files or links: a PDF, a picture, or an audio or video recording (for a recitation or a spoken answer). Audio and video play right in the marking view. There is no answer key, you mark it yourself.
  • Matching: add 2 to 10 pairs, each with an item and what it matches. Students see the right-hand side shuffled and match each item. Partial credit: each correct match earns its share of the marks.
  • Ordering: type 2 to 10 items in the correct order. Students see them shuffled and put them in order. Partial credit for every item in the right place.
  • Fill blanks (Fill in the blanks): type a sentence and select a word, then press Make selected word a blank. Blanks show as [[word]]. Add another accepted spelling like [[Rome|roma]]. Up to 10 blanks. Partial credit for each blank filled correctly, ignoring capital letters.
  • Number (Numeric): enter the Correct number. Under More options you can set an Allowed error (±) so close answers still count, and a Unit such as cm. Marked automatically.

Rules for building questions

  • An assignment can have up to 100 questions.
  • Questions can be added only to online assignments.
  • Press Edit on a question to change it, or Remove to delete it. These buttons are hidden once students have handed in.
  • The questions' marks add up to the assignment's total, shown at the top of the Questions step. When there are questions, the total comes from them.

Step 3: Mark submissions

  1. Scroll to Submissions. Each student card shows when they handed in, a Late tag if it came after the due day ended, and a mark or needs marking.
  2. For an online assignment, each question shows the student's answer and a box for its marks. Auto-marked questions are already filled in. Questions you must mark show a mark placeholder.
  3. Enter marks for every question. Marks cannot be more than the question's maximum.
  4. Optionally write Feedback for the student.
  5. Press Save marks (or Update marks later).

Common questions

What does on paper mean?

The class does the work away from the portal, so there are no online questions. You can still set a due date and total marks.

Why can't I edit the questions?

A student has already handed it in. Questions are locked from that moment so marks stay consistent.

Which question types need marking by hand?

Essay, File upload, and Short answer when you did not enter any right answers.
